Cougars Earn a No. 3 Seed

PROVO -- No. 8/8 BYU has received an at-large invitation to the 2011 NCAA Tournament and will play Wofford of the Southern Conference in the second round of the Southeast Region on Thursday in Denver, Colo., at the Pepsi Center. BYU is the No. 3 seed in the Southeast Region and Wofford is the No. 14 seed.

This season marks the first year with a 68-team field. The four first round games will be played in Dayton, Ohio, on March 15 and 16. The Tournament will be broadcast on CBS, TNT, TBS and truTV. All games will also be available online at mmod.ncaa.com..

The Cougars (30-4) are the No. 3 seed after earning a No. 7 seed last season and a No. 8 seed the previous three seasons. The winner of the BYU-Wofford game will advance to face the winner of No. 6 seed St. John’s and No. 11 seed Gonzaga on Saturday.

Last season BYU defeated Florida 99-92 in double overtime to advance in the tournament for the first time since 1993. The Cougars fell 84-72 to Kansas State in the second round.

Wofford finished the season 20-12 and 14-4 in the Southern Conference. The Terriers won the Southern Conference title to earn an automatic bid. Noah Dahlman leads Wofford in scoring at 20.0 points per game and Cameron Rundles and Jamar Diggs add 13.8 and 12.4 points per game, respectively.

BYU has posted the best record in program history this season at 30-4 overall while sharing the Mountain West Conference regular season title with a 14-2 league mark. Dave Rose, the MWC Co-Coach of Year and USBWA District VIII Coach of the Year, has led BYU to five-straight 25-plus win seasons and back-to-back 30-win campaigns.

Jimmer Fredette, the nation’s leading scorer at 28.5 points per game, has earned multiple All-America and national player of the year honors. He was also named the MWC and USBWA District Player of the Year. This season Fredette has claimed the BYU single-game (52 points vs. New Mexico), single-season (970 points) and career (2,501 points) scoring records.

Jackson Emery, the MWC Defensive Player of the Year, adds 12.6 points, 2.6 assists and 2.8 steals per game. This season Emery has set the BYU single-season (94 steals) and career (242) steals records.

This will be BYU's 26th NCAA Tournament appearance, fifth-consecutive and eighth in the last 11 years (2001, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011). The Cougars have a 12-28 record in the NCAA Tournament.
