PROVO -- BYU men’s basketball players will wear pink shoes and the coaching staff will wear sneakers against Colorado State on Wednesday to promote cancer awareness and to support Cougar women’s basketball player Alexis Kaufusi in her own fight against cancer.

“Our players and our staff want Alexis to know that we are thinking of her during this difficult time,” BYU head coach Dave Rose said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with her and her family as she fights this terrible disease. We wish her the very best as she goes through her treatments.”

Kaufusi, a sophomore forward from Provo, Utah, was diagnosed with cancer earlier this month. She played in the team’s first 20 games and helped the Cougars to a 13-7 record. Last season she played in all 33 games and averaged 6.9 points and 4.5 rebounds.

BYU was one of several programs selected by Nike to wear pink shoes in an effort to raise awareness in the fight against cancer. Last season, the Cougars wore uniforms with pink trim and pink shoes in a home victory against Utah.

Colorado State coaches will also participate in the event by wearing tennis shoes. When BYU played at Colorado State earlier this season, both coaching staffs wore tennis shoes in support of the fight against cancer.

Wednesday’s game is schedule to tip at 6 p.m. MT. The game will be televised live on The Mtn.
