Player Notes

-After sinking a three-pointer with 14:24 remaining in the first half, Noah Hartsock has now made at least one trey in the last seven games. During that time Hartsock has shot 11-for-17 from long distance. Prior to those seven games, Hartsock had only recorded 3 treys during the season.

-Jackson Emery, who was honored prior to the tipoff, shot 3-for-3 from the field, all of which were from behind the arc, in the first half. Emery has started 81 games for the Cougars during his four-year career. BYU is 66-15 in those games.

-In the first play of the second half, Emery remained hot, hitting yet another three. Just over a minute later Emery hit a fade away bucket on the left side of the basket. Emery finished with 17 points on 6-8 shooting from the field.

Team Notes

-This is the second-straight game that all five starters have finished with double-digit scoring.

-BYU leads 17-3 in the all-time series with TCU, including 3-0 in the 2009-2010 season.

-In the last 7 games, BYU has shot 77-for-175 from behind the arc to give the team a .440 three-point percentage. Fredette has shot 29-for-59 to give him .490 percent, Emery has shot .528 on 28-for-53 shooting and Hartsock has shot 11-for-18 to give him a team-high .611 in the last 7 games.

Record Watch

-With the win, Jimmer Fredette surpassed Lee Cummard in wins played in with 98 career victories during his four years at BYU, giving the senior guard the second most victories in Cougar history. Fredette and Cummard were previously tied with 97 career wins.

-Fredette hit a free throw with 13:53 left to play, giving him 21 straight made free throws which is the longest free throw streak this season. One minute later, Fredette hit four free throws after a technical foul call to increase that streak to 25 consecutive made from behind the charity stripe. However, on Fredette’s next trip to the stripe the streak was broken as Fredette missed the front end of a one-and-one with 6:38 remaining. The BYU record is 48 consecutive made free throws by Tyler Haws last season.

Game Trends

-Led by Jackson Emery and Kyle Collinsworth, BYU took an early 8-2 lead in the first 4:36 of the game. Emery, the all-time BYU steals record holder, recorded yet another steal and a trey early while Collinsworth scored 4 early points.

With a 13-7 lead, the Cougars went on a 12-0 run in large part due to 10 straight points by the nation’s leading scorer, Jimmer Fredette. The streak gave the Cougars a 25-7 lead.

-Trailing 55-34, the Horned Frogs got their stroke from long range, hitting three-straight treys to go on a 9-0 run. TCU’s run ended when Fredette converted a three-point play with 13:53 left to play.

Postgame Quotes

BYU Head Coach Dave Rose

“I was really happy with how we came out in the first five or eight minutes of that game after a bye. Defensively, we were really engaged. I think they only scored two points in the first six or seven minutes. We guarded them hard, rebounded well and got off to a good start offensively. We hit some shots and distributed the ball well. We were able to get everyone engaged and that’s something we want to have happen. You can’t script it but our guys shared the ball, played hard, executed our game plan early and we were able to get a nice lead.”

“There were a lot of times when TCU put a few runs on us and we answered them but they are a very good TCU team so I’m really happy with the win.”

“Most of what they did Jimmer has seen before but TCU did a terrific job of changing the double team. I really felt like the rest of the guys reacted really well.”

TCU Head Coach Jim Christian

"They’re just a good shooting team. Jackson Emery is the most underrated player in the league, and he made some huge shots."

"I thought we did a pretty good job on Jimmer. On offense, we missed a lot of shots on top of the rim. To beat them you have to score in the lane. We never got over those missed plays and that hurt us, we needed to get over the hump."

"We just wanted our team to play better tonight and we played hard. We had some opportunities we missed that you have to make in order to beat them. You have to finish plays because they won’t miss those open opportunities and that’s what makes them a good basketball team."

"We tried to trap him (Jimmer) as much as could and run at him to get the ball out of his hands. We know he’s going to make plays so we tried to get the ball out of his hands because once he gets into certain rhythms, there’s nothing you can do. You got to keep playing him and can’t get frustrated. He’s capable of hitting amazing shots."

"To me, Emery was the key. He’s a great player. I told coach before the game if I could trade for anyone in the league, I’d want Jackson Emery. I think he plays the game the right way and makes up for a lot of other people’s mistakes on the floor."
