Cougars at Home to Face TCU

No. 9/9 BYU basketball will look to keeps its MWC record perfect when the Cougars host TCU on Tuesday, Jan. 18, in the Marriott Center at 8 p.m. MT. BYU is 17-1 overall and 3-0 in the MWC and has won seven-straight games, including last Tuesday’s 104-79 win at Utah. Jimmer Fredette scored 32 points in the first half and finished with 47, a record for a BYU player in the rivalry and tied for the second-highest single-game total in program history. TCU is 10-9 overall and 1-3 in the MWC and has lost five of six, including a 79-69 setback at Colorado State on Jan. 15. The Frogs’ conference victory was a 78-60 win over Wyoming at home. TCU is 1-5 on the road this season. Ronnie Moss leads the team in scoring at 15.3 points per game while Garlon Green adds 11.8 points per game and Hank Thorns averages 9.2 points and 5.8 assists per game, first in the MWC. TCU’s Last Outing — TCU Falls at Colorado State, 79-69

FORT COLLINS, Colo.—TCU’s road woes continued Saturday, as the squad dropped a 79-69 decision to Colorado State at the Rams’ Moby Arena. CSU shot over 60 percent from the field, including better than 70 percent in the first half.

The setback dropped the Horned Frogs to 10-9 overall and 1-3 in Mountain West Conference play. Colorado State improved to 12-5 overall and 2-1 in the MWC.

Freshman forward Amric Fields led TCU with a game-high 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting. He also totaled five rebounds and pair of steals. Joining Fields in double figures were junior guards Ronnie Moss and Hank Thorns, who scored 17 and 13 points respectively. Moss matched junior forward J.R. Cadot for the team lead with six rebounds, while Thorns dished out a game-high nine assists, his fifth game with as many helpers this season. Senior guard Greg Hill added nine points for the Frogs.

Four players scored in double figures to lead a hot-shooting CSU squad, including forward Andy Ogide, who recorded a double-double featuring 17 points on 8-of-13 shooting and a game-high 11 rebounds. Fellow forward Travis Franklin scored 14 points, while guards Dorian Green and Jesse Carr totaled 10 points each. Each of Carr’s points came in the second half to help turn back the Frogs.

CSU used an extremely efficient offensive performance to keep the Frogs at bay throughout the evening. In addition to shooting 60.4 percent (32-of-53) for the game, the squad was credited with 22 assists and more than half (40) of its points in the paint.

TCU had a tough time keeping up with CSU in the first half, as the Rams controlled the action throughout the opening period by shooting 72.4 percent (21-of-29) from the field. CSU attacked the paint early and often against the Frogs, scoring 26 of their 46 first-half points in the paint. TCU shot well itself (53.8 percent), but was unable to go shot-for-shot with the red-hot Rams.

CSU used seven consecutive points by Ogide to grab an early nine-point advantage, 17-8, just five and one-half minutes into the contest. A trey by Moss minutes later brought TCU back to within three points, but the Rams answered by rattling off a 14-3 run to jump on top by 14 points, 33-19. Franklin scored eight points during the spurt.

After trailing by 11 at intermission, 46-35, TCU was able to climb within five points just under six minutes into the half, but the Frogs would get no closer. The squad went without a basket for nearly five minutes during the middle of the period, and two consecutive layups by Carr, the last of which came with 6:02 remaining, put the Rams up by 14, 66-52.
