Fredette Repeats as MWC Player of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – BYU senior Jimmer Fredette and San Diego State senior Malcolm Thomas have been named the Mountain W est Conference Men’s Basketball Co-Players of the Week for games through January 9. This is the 11th career weekly accolade for Fredette and third for Thomas.

Fredette averaged 30.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game while leading the Cougars to wins over 25th-ranked UNLV and Air Force last week. Playing all 40 minutes of an 89-77 decision over the Runnin’ Rebels, the Glens Falls, N.Y., native scored a season-high 39 points, dished out five assists and grabbed six rebounds and one steal while leading the Cougars to their first win at UNLV since 2005. The senior guard followed that perform ance with 22 points, three rebounds and two assists in a 76-66 victory at home against Air Force. For the week, Fredette went 18-of-39 (.462) from the field, including 10-of-21 (.476) from 3-point range, and 15-of-17 (.882) from the free throw line.

Hailing from San Diego, Calif., Thomas recorded back-to-back double-doubles in helping the Aztecs to road wins at TCU and Utah. Against the Horned Frogs, the senior forward went 8-of-10 from the field and hit a pair of free throws to finish with 18 points, 10 rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocked shots in a 66-53 victory. Thomas followed that outing with 17 points, 14 rebounds, two assists, two blocked shots and one steal in a 71-62 triumph over the Utes. For the week, Thomas averaged 17.5 points, 12.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 2.0 blocked shots and 1.5 steals per game while going 14-of-25 (.560) from the field and 6-of-9 (.667) at the free throw line.
