OGDEN -- After suffering its first loss of the season, the No. 23 BYU men’s basketball team (11-1) bounced back to hold off Weber State (6-5) for a 72-66 victory Tuesday at the Dee Events Center in Ogden.

Riding a game-high 28 points from senior guard Jimmer Fredette, the Cougars held off a second-half Wildcat surge to give head Coach Dave Rose his 138th victory at the helm of the Cougars. Fredette added four assists, three rebounds and one steal on the night.

"It was a great game and I thought our guys really competed hard," Rose said. "Tonight was all about effort and desire to win from both teams, and our guys willed themselves to win."

Sophomore forward Chris Collinsworth, who started for the second time since returning from an ankle injury, joined Fredette and sophomore Brandon Davies in double figures by scoring 11 points, while adding two rebounds with one assist and a steal.

Scoring started slowly for both teams, as the Cougars grabbed their first lead of the game with 14 minutes left in the first half, a 6-5 advantage.

The Cougars rode a 15-4 run to take a 22-11 lead after Fredette hit a three pointer with 7:55 remaining in the first half. The Cougars took their biggest lead of the game with 4:37 left in the first half after Fredette’s second three pointer put BYU up 33-16. With the trey, Fredette became only the third Cougar to make 200 or more career three pointers.

A close second half was defined by each team going on respective runs, with Weber State pulling within six points after B.J. Porter hit a three pointer at the 14:22 mark.

Fredette answered back with a personal 8-0 run, leading BYU to a 51-37 lead with 12:23 left in the game after sinking his fourth three pointer of the night.

However, the Wildcats did not go away, pulling within five points with 7:26 after Weber State’s sixth three pointer of the second half made the score 58-53.

The Cougars held onto their lead despite letting the Wildcats within four points with 11 seconds left in the game.

BYU returns to the Marriott Center Thursday after eight-consecutive games on the road to face off against UTEP at 7 p.m.
