SOUTH PADRE ISLAND -- Tough defense and Noah Hartsock's game winner as time expired led BYU to a 77-75 double-overtime victory over South Florida in the South Padre Invitational on Friday. The Cougars will play for the South Padre Invitational title on Saturday at 7 p.m. CT against the winner of Texas Tech vs. Saint Mary's. The game will be televised live on Fox College Sports.
“It was fun to watch our guys compete,” BYU head coach Dave Rose said. “I think there are times when it is really easy to play hard. It’s really easy when things are going well for you, when you’re shooting the ball well, when you’re making free throws or getting big stops but this was a game where we were having a lot of problems, we were missing a lot of free throws and not making shots and our guys had a real will to win the game.”
With the score knotted 72-all in the second overtime, hit a three-pointer with 1:32 remaining to give the Cougars a three-point advantage. Augustus Gilchrist answered with a layup inside and Toarlyn Fitzpatrick hit 1-of-2 free throws with 22 seconds remaining to tie the score at 75-all. With a third overtime looming, Fredette drew a crowd in the paint and kicked out to Hartsock, who hit a baseline jumper as time expired for the win.
Fredette and Jackson Emery each registered season-high point totals, with Fredette scoring 32 points and Emery 20. Fredette also tied a career high with five steals and Charles Abouo added eight points and a team-best eight rebounds.
Fredette started off strong, scoring five of BYU’s first six points. The Cougars led 19-16 with 3:17 remaining in the half but South Florida closed with a 12-4 run to lead 28-23 at the half.
The Bulls used a 5-0 to start the second half to take their largest lead of the game at 33-23. Trailing by their largest deficit of the season, Fredette took over, scoring 10 points on six free throws and two layups in just under four minutes to pull the Cougars within one at 39-38. Trailiing 42-40, Fredette hit a trey with 7:38 remaining that gave the Cougars their first lead of the second half, 43-42.
From there it was all Emery for the Cougars, as he scored 14 of their next 15 points on two free throws and four threes, the last of which tied the score at 58-all with 1:20 remaining. Jawanza Poland answered on South Florida's next possession, nailing a three with 46 seconds remaining to give the Bulls a 61-58 lead. BYU would not be outdone as Charles Abouo - who had missed his previous four shots - calmly hit a three from the top of the key with 33 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime.
Abouo came up big again in the first overtime, scoring a left-handed layup with 2:27 remaining to pull BYU within two at 66-64. Fredette tied the score with a layup and his three with 1:00 remaining game the Cougars a 69-66 lead. However, it was Poland who again answered for USF, hitting a three-pointer and tying the score at 69-all with 30 seconds left on the clock. BYU had a shot for the win but Fredette's jumper fell short and the game was extended for one more overtime session.
BYU will face the winner of the Texas Tech vs. St. Marys game tomorrow at 7 p.m. CT on Fox College Sports.
