PROVO -- Dominant defense and fast breaking offense led the BYU men’s basketball team to a 109-60 victory against Chicago State Saturday night at the Marriott Center.
Jimmer Fredette totaled 27 points for the game to lead all players in scoring. Brandon Davies and Chris Collinsworth each scored 15 points, Kyle Collinsworth had 12 points and Jackson Emery scored 10 with a season-high four steals. Brock Zylstra scored a career-high of 11 points. It was the first time six Cougars have scored in double figures since 2006.
"For the most part I was just happy were able to play a lot of guys a lot of minutes and we were able to work on a lot of things,” said BYU head coach Dave Rose. "We shot the ball with a lot of confidence and defensively we forced them into some tough shots and were able to get the ball out in transition."
Victor Scott led Chicago State in scoring with 17, followed by Antonio Lofton with 13.
BYU grabbed 58 rebounds for the nights, compared to Chicago State’s 39.
Shooting 50 percent in the first half and 47 percent from the 3-point line, BYU held its opponent to 29 points and 33 percent shooting. BYU ended the half with 60 points, the first time the team has reached 60 in the first half since 1993.
BYU followed by shooting 46 percent in the second with 49 points scored for the half. Chicago State shot 36 percent and put up 31 points.
The Cougars charged forward to a 12-point lead early in the first half, securing the lead with a dunk from Chris Collinsworth and six points from Fredette.
Chicago State could not keep up as BYU threw 11 unanswered points on the board.
With 6:03 left in the half, Jackson Emery rebounded off a missed shot by Jonathan Montgomery and sent the ball across the court for a Zylstra 3-pointer, assisted by Fredette.
Zylstra turned around and stole the ball from Chicago State’s Antonio Lofton to assist Fredette in a dunk at 5:21.
Kyle Collinsworth took BYU to its largest lead of the first half with 1:22 left to play, putting the Cougars ahead 55-20. The half ended with a 60-29 score.
Fredette sank a no-sweat 3-pointer after five minutes of play in the second half followed by a free throw and layup, pushing BYU to a 77-35 lead. Another jumper and foul shot gave Fredette his own nine-point scoring streak.
The biggest lead of the game came when Davies hit a jumper to give BYU a 90-39 lead.
Kyle Collinsworth broke 100 for the Cougars, putting in a free throw with 4 left in the game. The younger Collinsworth threw down a dunk seconds later to bring the score to 102-58.
A jumper from Kyle Collinsworth brought on the final score, 109-60.
