Remember When... Mike Hall's Dunk was the ESPN Play of the Day
In BYU’s first meeting with Air Force in the 2003-04 season, the Cougars lost 74-52 at the Academy. The Cougars faced the Falcons at home on Feb. 23, 2004 in need of a big home win to bolster their NCAA Tournament resume. BYU trailed for much of the game but a Mike Hall dunk midway through the second half sparked the momentum and the Cougars earned a big win over the first-place Falcons.
BYU started fast, opening with an 8-0 lead. Air Force responded and took the lead for the rest of the half on a three-point play by Antoine Hood with 12:37 before the break. The Falcons led by three at the half and extended their lead to eight at 36-28 with 14:45 remaining. Trailing 41-36, BYU went on a 7-0 run and took a 43-41 lead on a layup by Jake Shoff. Hood scored to tie the game but Hall’s thunderous dunk over Co-MWC Player of the Year Nick Welch on BYU’s ensuing possession helped swing the momentum. The Cougars took the lead for good a minute later, fought off several Falcon rallies and won the game 67-61.
Hall’s throwdown was the ESPN Play of the Day on SportsCenter.
