BYU was picked to finish ninth in the 2005-06 MWC preseason poll and after a 2-3 start and trailing TCU by eight at home with less than one minute remaining, the prediction wasn’t looking to far off.

Freshman Lee Cummard hit a three to tie the score at 57-all before the Horned Frogs raced to a 69-61 lead thanks to a 12-4 run. With the game all but over, the Cougars roared back, sparked by a Brock Reichner three to cut the lead to five. Two TCU free throws pushed the lead back to seven but Rashaun Broadus drove the length of the floor for a layup and after a Horned Frog turnover, he hit an NBA-range three to cut the lead to two at 71-69.

TCU hit 1-of-2 free throws but Cummard answered with a three with 10 seconds remaining to tie the score at 72-all and send it into overtime. TCU scored first to open the extra period but BYU went on a 10-2 run to go up by six at 82-76. Broadus and Reichner both hit threes during the run. A TCU three at the one-minute mark cut the lead to three at 82-79 but the Cougars sealed the deal by scoring seven of the last eight points.

The win improved BYU’s record to 3-3 in MWC play and sparked a 10-1 finish to help the Cougars conference play with a 12-4 record, tied for second after being picked to finish ninth in the preseason.
