PROVO -- Jimmer Fredette shot a perfect 6-6 from the field to lead the BYU Cougars with 16 points in the first exhibition game of the 2010-11 season, a 101-55 win against Laval University at the Marriott Center Friday night.

“I was happy tonight to get a lot of different combinations on the floor,” Rose said. “Early in the game you could see Jackson and Jimmer were very comfortable and the rest of the guys were trying to find their way. All in all for an early season exhibition game I was pleased but there are a lot of things we can work on to get better.”

The 16 points from Fredette came in just under 17 minutes of playing time for the senior guard. Fellow senior Jackson Emery finished with 13 points and sophomore Brandon Davies added 10 points and five rebounds. Kyle Collinsworth added an impressive line with seven points, six assists with zero turnovers, five rebounds, two blocks and two steals.

Fredette got the Cougars off to an impressive start by opening the game with 11 points on four shots despite playing less than ten minutes in the first half. Emery contributed eight points of his own to go along with two assists and a steal in the opening half.

Junior Charles Abouo made the most exciting play of the first half when he took a pass from forward Brandon Davies and slammed it home to put the Cougars ahead by 20, a lead they would maintain until the half at 42-22.

BYU extended the lead in a hurry to begin the second half. Emery and sophomore Stephen Rogers nailed quick threes on assists from Fredette to take a commanding 52-27 advantage.

The lead continued to build until it reached the 30-point mark when Abouo nabbed a steal and went coast-to-coast for the finish.

Guard Brock Zylstra followed Abouo’s points by single-handedly going on a 8-0 run with two threes and a lay-up to make the score 76-38 with 8:17 remaining.

A variety of new players for BYU gained valuable experience in the final minutes of the second half, including Nick Martineau, Kyle Collinsworth, Chris Collinsworth, Stephen Rogers and Anson Winder.

“Kyle does a great job pushing the ball,” Zylstra said of this set of players time on the floor together. “Everyone was looking for the extra pass and it was great to see everyone being so unselfish.”

The group of newcomers built on the Cougar lead and held Laval’s offense to a limited number of points during their time on the floor. Martineau hit a shot with 14 seconds remaining that put BYU over the 100-point mark for the first time since a March 6 matchup with TCU last season.

BYU-Hawaii will come to the Marriott Center on Friday, Nov. 5 for the Cougars' second and final exhibition game this season. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. MST and the game will be broadcast live on BYU-TV.
