Remember When... Fredette Rallied the Cougars Past SDSU?
On Feb. 24, 2009, with BYU’s hopes of a third-consecutive MWC regular season championship hanging by a thread, sophomore point guard Jimmer Fredette caught fire and led the Cougars to a second half comeback at San Diego State for a 69-59 victory.
BYU entered the game in a three-way tie for second at 8-4 and trailing Utah by two games in the standings. The Cougars trailed the Aztecs 33-20 at the half and 45-31 with 15:40 remaining. BYU then took over and outscored the Aztecs 38-14 to finish the game. After whittling the lead down to six at 55-49, BYU put the game away with a 15-0 run. Jackson Emery started it with a three and Jimmer Fredette then scored nine-straight points on two free throws, a layup, a three and two more free throws. Emery ended the run with a bank-in three as the shot clock was winding down with 50 seconds remaining in the game. The Cougars sealed the victory by hitting 5-of-6 from the free throw line.
Fredette finished the game with 28 points on 10-of-19 shooting, five rebounds, four assists and five steals. He scored 20 points in the second half to lead the comeback effort.
The Cougars went on to win their final three regular season games — including a home win over Utah — to claim a share of the MWC regular season title.
