The way Dave Rose’s head coaching career began was an exception to the rule. In the 2005-06 season opener, the Cougars fell 83-71 to Loyola Marymount on Nov. 18, 2005, at home. BYU and its fans didn’t experience that losing feeling in the Marriott Center again for more than three years as Rose led the Cougars on a 53-game home winning streak — the best in program history.

After the loss to Loyola Marymount, BYU won its last 14 home games in 2005-06, went 17-0 in 2006-07, 16-0 in 2007-08 and won its first six home games to start the 2008-09 season, with the last win of the streak coming on Dec. 13. The streak ended on Jan. 3, 2009 against No. 6 Wake Forest, making it 1,110 days between losses.

During the 53-game winning streak that included 24 conference victories and 29 non-conference wins, BYU outscored its opponents 81.1 to 63.3 and shot .492 from the field and .400 from three compared to .387 and .323 by its opponents. The Cougars also out-rebounded their foes 39.8 to 32.6 per game during the streak and had 18.5 assists per game compared to 11.2 assists for their opponents.
