With BYU battling to stay atop the Mountain West Conference standings near the end of the 2007-08 season, the Cougars faced a difficult battle against New Mexico at The Pit. BYU trailed 58-50 with five minutes remaining in regulation but a Trent Plaisted layup and a three from Lee Cummard tied the score at 58-all. Chris Collinsworth hit 1-of-2 from the free throw line to tie the score at 63-all and send the game into overtime.

With five seconds left in the extra period and BYU trailing 69-68, Plaisted was fouled and went to the line for two free throws. A career .547 free throw shooter, Plaisted hit the first to tie the score at 69-all.

"He told everybody in the huddle before the second free throw that he was going to make it, so that was a good sign," BYU coach Dave Rose said.

Plaisted kept his word and nailed the second to give the Cougars the win and an 11-2 mark in MWC play.

"Obviously, I'm not the best free-throw shooter in the league, but I had a lot of confidence stepping up to the line and they went in," Plaisted said.

BYU finished the season 27-8 overall and won the regular season MWC title by two games with a 14-2 mark.
