Fredette Named Top Point Guard by Sporting News

PROVO -- BYU guard Jimmer Fredette has been named the nation’s top point guard by Sporting News Magazine heading into the 2010-11 college basketball season.

The Sporting News stated the following about Fredette: “Lots of people doubt his athleticism, including those who can read the name on his jersey as he blows by for another layup.”

Also among the top-five point guards are Malcolm Delany (Virginia Tech), Kyrie Irving (Duke), Kemba Walker (Connecticut) and Josh Selby (Kansas).

Fredette enters his senior year after a junior season in which he averaged 22.1 points (seventh in the nation) and 4.7 assists while leading the Cougars to 30 victories – a program record. He set BYU records with 49 points and nine threes in a win at Arizona and scored 37 points in a 99-92 double-overtime win over Florida in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

In 2009-10, the Glens Falls, N.Y., native was named to five All-America teams, first-team All-Mountain West Conference and the USBWA District VIII Player of the Year.
