Tavernari Named MWC Co-Player of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – BYU senior Jonathan Tavernari and Colorado State junior Andy Ogide have been named the Mountain West Conference Men’s Basketball Co-Players of the Week for games through January 10. This is the first career weekly accolade for both recipients.

A 6-6 guard/forward from Sao Bernardo, Brazil, Tavernari led BYU to a Conference home win over UNLV (77-73) and a non-conference road win at UTEP (83-77) last week. Against UNLV, he came off the bench to score 17 points on 4-of-9 shooting from the field, including 4-of-8 from beyond the arc, and pull down a season-high nine rebounds. Tavernari scored 14 of his 17 points in the second half, shooting 3-for-5 from three-point range and knocking down 5-of-6 attempts from the charity stripe. He added three assists, two blocks and one steal in 30 minutes vs. the Runnin’ Rebels. Tavernari followed with a season-high 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting, including 3-of-6 from beyond the arc, vs. UTEP. He scored 11 of his points in the second half, while collecting five of his six total rebounds. Tavernari also tallied two assists and one steal in 19 minutes off the bench. On the week, he averaged 18.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game, while shooting 11-for-21 from the floor (.524%), 7-for-14 from three-point range (.500%) and 7-for-8 from the charity stripe (.875%).

Ogide, a 6-9 forward from Marrieta, Ga., led Colorado State to its first 2-0 start in Conference play since 2003 with wins at Wyoming (83-73) and at home vs. Air Force (70-48). Against Wyoming, he scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed a game-high-tying six rebounds. He also collected a career-high three steals and dished out two assists, while shooting 9-of-16 from the floor in 27 minutes vs. the Cowboys. Against Air Force, Ogide was a perfect 4-of-4 from the field in scoring a game-best 13 points. He also tallied five rebounds and three assists in 22 minutes of action. For the week, Ogide averaged 17.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists per contest. He shot 65 percent from the field (13-for-20) and 81.8 percent from the charity stripe (9-of-11).
