Player Notes

— Making 8-of-8 from the free throw line, Fredette set a new BYU record for consecutive free throws made. Fredette’s 35 in a row breaks Michael’s Smith record of 32 in 1989. After missing his first two free throws of the season, Fredette is 48 for his last 49. His previous career high was 19 straight, accomplished last season.

— Tyler Haws secured the first double-double of his career with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Haws set career highs in points, rebounds and minutes (37). Haws had 9 points and 6 boards at halftime.

— Haws is the first Cougar to record at least 10 rebounds in a game this season and the second Cougar to post a double-double on the year.

— Jonathan Tavernari had a new season high 4 assists. He had 3 in the first half.

— Noah Hartsock scored 13 points, breaking his previous career high of 11 against Wyoming last season.

— Fredette had a 6-0 assist-to-turnover ratio.

— Jackson Emery shot 5-of-9 from three-point range, tying his career high in makes and setting a new career best in attempts. Emery secured his sixth game with multiple treys, fourth with at least 4 from downtown, and second with 5 this season.

— Dating back to last season, with 10 points against Arizona State, Jimmer Fredette has now scored in double figures in 22 consecutive games. It’s the longest streak in double-digits since Russell Larsen put together 44 consecutive games scoring at least 10 points during the 1993-94 and 1994-95 seasons.

Team Notes

— The Sun Devils’ 23 points at half were the second-fewest allowed in a first half this season.

— BYU totaled 19 assists as a team, second-most on the season.

— BYU had 7 turnovers, the fewest since the Cougars had 5 last season against Utah on 2/28/09.

— Over the last three games against USU, San Francisco and ASU, BYU made 15 straight free throws as a team. Going 23-of-25 tonight, the Cougars have made 37 of their last 39. BYU leads the country in team free throw percentage at .842.

— BYU last played Arizona State in the Marriott Center on 11/24/01, winning 82-70.

“I was really pleased tonight with our effort and the contributions from so many different players. I think the depth of our team really showed tonight. They were really concentrating on Jimmer and other players stepped up. This was a really good team win for us.”

On ASU’s comeback: “I think we got in a tough spot because we became too perimeter-oriented offensively. We wanted to get to the rim more but we were able to rebound well and get some good put-backs.”

On Haws: “Tyler has such a consistent energy and he always gives the same energy. We knew that with the focus on Jimmer someone would be open and would have to step up and make some shots. I think 17 points and 11 rebounds this early in the season as a freshman is quite impressive. We are happy with his progress.”

“To have ten turnovers in the first half really hurt us and we took a lot of bad shots.”

“Demetrius [Walker] brought us a lot of energy and got several rebounds for us. Some of our guys had a challenging night.”

“BYU is very skilled as a team. Even though Fredette was missing his shots, he still went 8-for-8 from the line and they had other guys step up. We are very respectful of BYU and we know they have a very good program.”

“As a team we had more energy in the second half; we hope to build from the experience from both halves and improve as a team.”

On team play: “When you play great teams, they will focus on your best players and everyone has to step it up. Our coaches always tell us that it is important to pass up the good shot for the better shot. The key to winning is playing as a team and not thinking about yourself. We were able to do that tonight and I think that says a lot for our team.”

On playing big minutes as a freshman: “Every game I feel like I get more comfortable out on the floor. Tonight I was able to make a few shots and a few put-backs. I feel grateful for the opportunity to play.”

On Jackson Emery: "The thing that I love about Jackson is that he is a competitor. He fights the whole game and his energy is huge for this team. I have watched him do that since high school and I have tried to become more like that."
