PROVO -- Revenge belonged to BYU Tuesday night as the men’s basketball team, highlighted by a career night from freshman Tyler Haws, defeated Arizona State 81-68 in the Marriott Center.

Haws had the first double-double of his career with a team-leading 17 points and 11 rebounds. Jackson Emery also recorded 17 points, nailing five three-pointers to go with five rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Last season, the Sun Devils handed the Cougars their first loss in a close 76-75 final in Arizona. Another close contest seemed likely in the early minutes of the game as looked as the Cougars and the Sun Devils stayed close

With just over 11 minutes remaining, a layup by Michael Lloyd, Jr., proved to be the turning point for BYU. Brandon Davies’ one-handed dunk and back-to-back treys by Jackson Emery helped the Cougars extend their lead. After a trey at the buzzer by Haws, BYU went into the locker room with a comfortable 16-point lead, 39-23, at halftime.

Early in the second half, a foul sent Jimmer Fredette to the free throw line four minutes into the period. The junior made both shots, hitting his 33rd-straight foul shot to pass Michael Smith’s record for consecutive free throws made with 32 set in 1989.

BYU had its largest lead of the game at 20 points early in the half, but Arizona State crept up on the Cougars bringing it within four with five minutes left in the game. Foul shots down the stretch, including 6-for-6 from Haws, 4-for-4 from Jonathan Tavernari and 8-for-8 from Fredette put the home team ahead and BYU went on to improve its record to 7-1.

Noah Hartsock had a career-high 13 points on 6-for-9 shooting with four rebounds and a steal. Jonathan Tavernari also came off the bench to add nine points, five rebounds, and a season-high four assists.

BYU will take the court again Saturday at Fresno State at 7 p.m. PT.
