BYU vs. Utah State

Dec. 2, 2009

The Spectrum (Logan, UT)

Player Notes

— Dating back to last season, with 19 points against Utah State, Jimmer Fredette has now scored in double figures in 20 consecutive games. The last Cougar with at least 19 games in a row in double figures was Travis Hansen during the 2002-03 season with 21 straight.

— Making 6-of-6 from the free throw line, Fredette has now made 23 straight free throws. After missing his first two free throws of the season, Fredette is 34 for his last 35. His previous career high was 19 straight, accomplished last season.

- Fredette grabbed a new season-high 7 rebounds, one off of his career high.

Lamont Morgan, Jr., led the team in assists (3) for the first time this season.

Noah Hartsock was a spark off the bench in the first half, blocking two big shots that led to scores on the offensive end while also adding 4 points and 4 rebounds

Team Notes

- Utah State’s 4 three-point makes were the second-fewest BYU has allowed this season while the Aggies .308 (4-of-13) mark from distance was a season low for a Cougar opponent.

Record Watch

— With one 3-pointer tonight, Tavernari is now two away from breaking Mark Bigelow’s BYU career record of 213 threes made.

— Tavernari also added 1 steal to his career total, tying him with Matt Montague for seventh place on the Cougar career list.

Game Trends

- The Cougars jumped out on top to start the game, leading 10-3 after the first three minutes of the game. Emery and Fredette hit treys while Miles and Haws added scores from in close.

- BYU went on a 9-0 run, going up 19-11 midway through the first half. Four different Cougars scored during the run: Tyler Haws with a jumper, Noah Hartsock on a layup, Chris Miles with a jumper, and Charles Abouo with a layup and a free throw on an and-one.

BYU Head Coach Dave Rose

“It was a hard-fought game, and I thought that it was very similar to the game that we played against Utah State last year. We just couldn’t get anything consistent going offensively. They did a really good job on the boards. They out-rebounded us.”

“We couldn’t get into any type of a flow or rhythm offensively. Defensively, they did a really good job of guarding our ball screens. We settled for some pretty quick perimeter shots. I thought we could have been better. They went to the free throw line 10 or 12 more times than we did. When we get in a situation where we are not hitting jump shots, we need to make adjustments and attack the basket and get to the free throw line.”
