BYU Suffers First Loss, Falls in Logan
LOGAN -- BYU men’s basketball suffered its first loss of the 2009-10 season, falling 71-61 at Utah State on Wednesday at the Spectrum. The Cougars are now 5-1 on the year while the Aggies are 4-2.
“It was a hard fought game, and I thought that it was very similar to the game that we played against Utah State last year," BYU head coach Dave Rose said. "We just couldn’t get anything consistent going offensively. They did a really good job on the boards. They out-rebounded us.”
Jimmer Fredette led BYU with 19 points, seven rebounds and two assists while Chris Miles added 11 points and five rebounds. Utah State was led by Jared Quayle’s 22 points and four assists.
Jackson Emery opened the scoring for the Cougars with a three. After Tai Wesley tied the score with a three-point play, BYU responded with a 7-0 run started with Chris Miles scoring inside, Jimmer Fredette hitting a three and Haws scoring on a turnaround jumper inside.
The Aggies answered with an 8-0 run, but BYU did one point better, coming back with a 9-0 run of its own. Hartsock had a bucket and two blocks that led to five points, including a three-point play by Charles Abouo. Utah State put together a six-point rally, but Fredette answered by hitting two threes to put BYU ahead 25-19 with 5:58 remaining before the half. The Cougars maintained their lead, though Utah State’s Tyler Newbold hit a three and two free throws in the final two minutes to cut BYU’s lead to three, 35-32 at the half.
Fredette led BYU in the first half with nine points and two assists while Emery added eight and Haws had six. Hartsock came off the bench and tallied four points, four rebounds and two blocks. Wesley had seven and Bendall six to lead Utah State.
Utah State struck first in the second half with two free throws by Nate Bendall. Fredette responded with two of his own but the Aggies scored four straight to take the lead at 38-37, their first since 11-10. BYU led briefly after two Fredette free throws made it 39-38 but Utah State scored the next five points to take the lead for good.
The Cougars return to action on Saturday, Dec. 5, against San Francisco at EnergySolutions Arena at 4 p.m. Listen to the game live on KSL Newsradio 102.7 FM and 1160 AM or online at KSL.com. The game will be broadcast live on The Mtn.
