Cougars Sprint Past Southern
PROVO, Utah, (Nov. 24, 2009) – In the highest-scoring game for a Cougar squad since Nov. 16, 2007, the BYU men’s basketball team (4-0) ran away from the Jaguars of Southern University (0-4) Tuesday at the Marriott Center, 107-51.
All 13 players scored points against the Jaguars, Logan Magnusson scoring his first and the team's last points of the game off of a three-pointer with 20 seconds left in the game. All 13 players also tallied at least one rebound on the night. Five Cougars were in double figures with Jackson Emery the leading scorer with 16 points.
Jonathan Tavernari and Chris Miles each tallied 14 points while Charles Abouo added 11. Jimmer Fredette had a double-double with 12 points and 10 assists while true freshman Brandon Davies led the team with eight rebounds.
The team earned 40 points off of 22 Southern turnovers, along with 25 second-chance points, shooting 56.5 percent from the field for the entire game.
Southern gained possession of the tipoff, but the Cougars put the first points on the board after a steal from Miles and a long two from Tavernari. The only lead the Jaguars had in the game was in the third minute of play at 4-2.
Emery sparked a 15-2 run with back-to-back-to-back three pointers. He was 3-of-4 from treyville for the first half. Noah Hartsock had back-to-back field goals, the second coming off of a defensive rebound followed by an offensive rebound to widen the lead to 33-14.
To end the half, the Cougars chalked up an 8-0 run, topped off with the first dunk of the season from Emery with five seconds left. Emery led BYU in points at the half with 13, shooting 2-of-2 free throws, 3-of-4 treys and 4-of-7 from the field while also adding five steals. He was followed by Tavernari who posted 11 points in the half, shooting 5-of-9 from the field.
The team went into the locker room with a perfect free throw percentage, tallying 6-of-6 from the stripe and shooting 53.7 percent from the field. Ten of 11 Cougars who saw playing time scored points in the first half. The Cougars earned a 35-point lead at the half, 57-35, the largest point deficit of the season and the largest halftime lead in more than a decade.
Fredette started off the second half making a two in the first 12 seconds of the game. He was followed by Miles who posted up to draw the foul and score, later making his free throw to complete the three-point play.
The Cougars continued to widen the lead with all players contributing. BYU finished with an 11-4 run to end the game, sparked by the point guard play of Lamont Morgan, Jr., who finished with a career-high seven assists.
The Cougars will next host Weber State at the Marriott Center Friday at 7:30 p.m. MT.
