Tavernari Named to Brazilian Senior National Team 12-Man Roster

SAO -- For the second-straight summer BYU’s Jonathan Tavernari is the only non-professional to make the Brazilian Senior National Team’s 12-man roster. The roster includes NBA stars Leandro Barbosa (Phoenix Suns) and Anderson Varejao (Cleveland Cavaliers) and Spanish League star Tiago Splitter, a former first-round pick of the San Antonio Spurs.

Tavernari and the Brazilian Senior National Team will participate in the Marchand Continental Championship Cup from Aug. 18 to 20 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Beginning Aug. 26 Brazil will compete in the 2009 FIBA Americas Championship. The top four teams qualify for the 2010 FIBA World Championship.

Brazil will be a member of Group B at the Americas Championship along with Argentina, Dominican Republic, Panama and Venezuela. Group A includes Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands and Uruguay.

Tavernari has been playing with the Brazilian National Team all summer, helping his country finish undefeated at the International Tournament of Almada (Lisbon, Portugual) and the Torneio Super Four Eletrobras (Rio de Janeiro) and fourth at the Jogos da Lusofonia (Lisbon). Tavernari and Brazil also played in the Super Four Tournament in Argentina and finished 1-2.

In all Tavernari has played 12 games and is averaging 12.1 points and shooting 63.8 percent from the field and 61.5 percent on threes.
