Brazil Drops Final Two Games at Jogos, Finishes Fourth

LISBON -- Brazil fell 95-71 to Portugal on Sunday in the consolation game at the Jogos da Lusofonia and finished fourth overall. On Saturday Brazil fell 80-71 to Angola.

Jonathan Tavernari had eight points in the loss to Angola and came back with 17 point against Portugal, hitting 5-of-7 three-pointers.

Tavernari Nets 17 in Big Win

LISBON -- Jonathan Tavernari hit four threes and scored 17 points as Brazil defeated Guinea Bissau 105-46 on Wednesday at the Jogos da Lusofonia. Brazil is now 2-0 at the games and 5-0 overall this summer.

Tavernari hit 4-of-6 from downtown and 5-of-7 overall from the field. He also hit 3-of-4 from the free throw line and grabbed three rebounds.

With the victory, Brazil won group 2 and will now face Angola—which finished second in group 1—on Saturday. The winner will face the winner of Portugal and Cape Verde on Sunday in the championship game. The losing teams will play on Sunday for third place.

Brazil defeated Angola 89-86 on a last-second three by Tavernari on July 10 at the International Tournament of Almada.

Brazil Defeats Cape Verde to Open Jogos da Lusofonia

LISBON -- The Brazilian Senior National Team defeated Cape Verde 90-72 in its first game at the Jogos da Lusofonia on Tuesday.

BYU's Jonathan Tavernari totaled 10 points for Brazil. He hit 4-of-6 from the field, including 2-of-4 from downtown, and added four assists and one rebound. Brazil led 35-31 at the half before pulling away. In other action Portugal defeated Angola 81-72.

Also participating in the eight-team basketball tournament are Angola, Guinea Bissau, Macau, Mozambique, Portugal and Sao Tom and Principe.
