Trio of Cougars Earn Academic All-Conference Honors
PROVO -- Three members of the BYU men’s basketball team were named to the Mountain West Conference Academic All-Conference squad.
"We are very pleased with the success of our student-athletes in the classroom and in competition," said BYU Director of Athletics Tom Holmoe. "Both endeavors are equally important to us at BYU and demonstrate the quality of our student-athletes."
Starting guard Jackson Emery and backup postmen James Anderson and Gavin MacGregor were honored by the MWC. Emery, a sophomore from Alpine, Utah, started 32 of 33 games for the Cougars (25-8 overall and 12-4 in the MWC), who won their third-straight regular season conference title by sharing the 2009 crowd. Emery averaged 7.8 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.0 assists and led the league in assist/turnover ratio.
Anderson, a freshman out of Page, Ariz., played in 27 games and averaged 2.5 points and 1.6 rebounds. He posted a career-high 16 points at home against Colorado State. MacGregor, a senior from Ridgecrest, Calif., averaged 2.6 points and 2.3 rebounds per game.
BYU (148 honorees) led the conference with 31 more student-athletes earning academic accolades than any other MWC institution. New Mexico followed with 117, trailed by in-state rival Utah who added 88 student-athletes; the list was rounded out by UNLV (86), Wyoming (78), Air Force (77), TCU (70), Colorado State (64) and San Diego State (48).
