MAUI, Hawai'i (Nov. 23, 2004) -- Stanford's stifling defense and 11-0 run to start the second half led to a 62-53 victory over BYU Tuesday in the second round of the EA SPORTS Maui Invitational.

"We started the game better and competed defensively," BYU coach Steve Cleveland said. "We got into a game that we had a chance to win. I thought we played good team defense. Unfortunately in the second half we missed opportunities. Right now defensively we're making huge strides. Guys just have to step up and make plays."

After struggling offensively against North Carolina, the Cougars started off hot versus the Cardinal, hitting on four of their first five shots to jump out to a 9-6 lead. Senior center Jared Jensen and sophomore forward Garner Meads each made two shots in the early run.

BYU was able to extend its lead to 16-11 on a 10-footer by freshman center Derek Dawes before Stanford went on a run to take a 28-25 lead at half time.

The Cougars struggled to start the second half as Stanford scored the first 11 points to jump out to a 39-25 lead. Meads finally got BYU on the board in the second with left-handed shot in the post. It started a 6-0 run that cut the Cardinal lead to eight.

Stanford halted the Cougar run and extended its lead to as many as 15 late in the second half. Junior forward Keena Young provided a spark off the bench for BYU, scoring six points and grabbing four rebounds. His effort in combination with and eight point outburst by senior point guard Terry Nashif cut the Cardinal lead to seven with less than one minute left to play.

Jensen led the way with 11 points and Meads added nine. Sophomore Mike Rose added eight points. Dawes was the leader for BYU on the boards, grabbing 10 to go along with four points.

BYU shot 35.4 percent (17-48) as a team, including 25 percent (4-16) from three-point range. The Cougars won the battle on the boards, grabbing 38 compared to 34 for the Cardinal. Dan Grunfeld led the way for Stanford with 20 points.

BYU falls to 0-2 with the loss while Stanford improves to 2-1. The win is the Cardinal's second vs. BYU in six all-time meetings.

BYU will play host Chaminade in its final game of the EA SPORTS Maui Invitational at 5 p.m. MST (2 p.m. HT). The game can be heard live on KSL Newsradio 1160 or online at KSL.com.
