PROVO -- An all-around effort led the BYU men's basketball team's to an 85-70 victory Friday night against the BYU-Hawaii Seasiders in front of 9,773 screaming fans at Marriott Center. Both the Cougars' perimeter and post performances proved to be the key in defeating the Seasiders.

In the first half, the Cougars controlled the lead from tip-off, with Jared Jensen and Gardner Meads taking charge. Jensen led the Cougars with nine of his total 10 points in the first 20 minutes, while Meads scored six points, with two rebounds.

Despite BYU never letting go of its first-half lead, 17 fouls and an 0-for-8 shooting performance beyond the arc plagued the Cougars. BYU struggled from three-point land, shooting 3-for-18, only 16.7 percent for the game.

"We need better effort, more energy, better defense and less fouls," BYU head coach Steve Cleveland said. "It's like practice; we've had too many fouls.

In the second half, BYU's backcourt play came through after Meads fouled out late in the first half and Jensen had to leave in the middle of the second half. With the Cougars two starting post players out, the Seasiders' low-post threat and former Cougar, Jake Chrisman, kept the game close, scoring a game-high 25 points along with a team-high seven rebounds.

"I thought we started off slow; we were too excited," BYU-Hawaii head coach Ken Wagner said. "It was a big game for Jake and Shawn but once they settled down we got better."

Fortunately for the Cougars, two of their successful three-point shots came halfway through the second half, with back-to-back treys from point guard Terry Nashif and shooting guard Mike Hall, sparking the Cougars to pull away with a comfortable lead.

Hall led all Cougar scorers with a total of 16 points, with Sam Burgess adding 10 points. Backup point guard Austin Ainge scored 8 points and was the game-high leader in rebounds with nine while adding five assists. Nashif led the team with six assists.

BYU-Hawaii's other former Cougar, Shawn Opunui, finished the game with nine points but was held scoreless in the second half. Opunui was the Seasiders second-leading scorer last year at 16 points per game.

The Cougars will next be in action for a final home exhibition game Friday at 7 p.m. in the Marriott Center against the University of Calgary. The Cougars' regular-season opener will be Nov. 22nd against No. 3 North Carolina in Hawaii while BYU's home-opener will be at 7 p.m. Nov. 27th against the California Bears.
