BYU Overcomes Hansen Ejection to Defeat Kansas State at the Paradise Jam

ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands (Nov. 23, 2002) -- The Cougars outscored the Kansas State Wildcats 42-28 in the second half, overcoming a five-point halftime deficit to win 73-64. The win is their second of the season and their second consecutive victory at the Paradise Jam Tournament.

BYU turned on the defense once again in the second half, holding the Wildcats to just 29 percent shooting from the field and 0-4 on three point attempts. KSU made just one of its final 14 field goal attempts of the game.

The Cougars tied the game at 40 on a Travis Hansen three-pointer with 17 minutes to go. The trey was part of a 10-0 BYU run which gave BYU the lead at 48-40.

KSU fought back and tied the game at 52-52 on a Marques Hayden three-point play.

BYU controlled the boards down the stretch led by Jared Jensen. The sophomore hit six free throws in the final minutes to seal the victory. Ricky Bower also connected on four shots from the stripe in the final minute.

The Cougars shot a blistering 63 percent in the second half to gain the lead. Travis Hansen led BYU with 19 points on 6-11 field goal shooting-including two treys. Hansen was ejected from the game after being called for two quick technical fouls with 8:48 to go and BYU trailing by one at 54-53. The rest of the team picked up the slack, led by Mark Bigelow scoring 18 points including 3-5 shooting from behind the arc.

BYU's big men spent most of the night in foul trouble again with center Rafael Araujo fouling out for the second straight night after scoring nine points. Jared Jensen flirted with disqualification also, ending the game with four fouls and 10 points.

"It was a total team effort tonight," Jensen said. "Everyone made big plays for us in the second half."

The Wildcats capitalized on BYU's lack of inside presence, outscoring BYU 30-16 in the paint. Kansas State's bench kept them in the game outscoring BYU's reserves 37-15.

For the Wildcats, Marques Hayden scored 20 points and Tim Ellis added 14. Guard Frank Richards chipped in 13 points. The Wildcats also battled foul trouble with two players, Ellis and Jarrett Hart, both fouling out.

BYU coach Steve Cleveland was happy with his team's effort. "Success breeds confidence and confidence will ensure this team of more success in the future," he said.

BYU will take a day off and before playing the championship against 2-0 St. Bonaventure on Monday night at 5:30 pm MST. St. Bonaventure defeated Virginia Tech and Michigan to advance to Monday's contest wiht BYU. The game will be broadcast live on KSL 1160 AM Radio.
