ST. THOMAS, Virgin Islands (November 22,2002) -- BYU used 22 points, eight rebounds and five assists from lone senior Travis Hansen to beat the Toledo Rockets, 71-56, in the first round of the Paradise Jam at the University of the Virgin Islands.

Hansen kick-started the Cougars from the opening tip, scoring 15 points in the first half. "It's my responsibility as the only senior to pump the guys up and get us going in the first half," Hansen said.

Six minutes into the second half, Toledo committed its seventh team foul, putting BYU in the bonus for the remainder of the game. The Cougars shot 22-27 from the stripe and built a lead it would not give up. BYU stepped up the defense in the second half holding the Rockets to just 25.9 percent shooting from the field.

"We made some adjustments at halftime and shut down their two scorers," BYU coach Steve Cleveland said.

The Rockets were led in scoring by guards Sammy Villegas and Keith Triplett who each scored 13 points. Sharp-shooter, Nick Moore, was held to just 10 points on 4-9 shooting.

The Cougars took a 15-point lead on a Mark Bigelow three-pointer with just over ten minutes remaining. Two Ricky Bower treys extended the Cougars lead to 17 points with four minutes to go.

For BYU, Jared Jensen and Rafael Araujo spent most of the game in foul trouble. Both centers fouled out in the second half with a combined scoring effort of three points for the game.

With the inside game on the bench, Cleveland looked to the services of John Allen and Dan Howard. Allen scored five points, while Howard scored a new career-high 11 points. Bigelow chipped in 12 points and pulled down five boards. Bower also scored in double figures with 10.

The Cougars shot 42.9 percent from the floor including 8-13 (.615) from three-point range.

"Defensively we were really solid," Cleveland said. "We made some big shots when we needed them."

The Cougars play Kansas State Saturday afternoon in the second round of the tournament.

"We need to rebound a lot better against Kansas State to beat them, they are a great team," Hansen said.

The game will be broadcast on KSL 1160 AM on tape delay after the BYU-Utah football game.
