Lyday Scores 35 in BYU Win at Utah State

LOGAN -- Junior college transfer Terrell Lyday had the best game of his college career, at any level, Saturday when he scored 35 points to lead BYU to an 82-73 road win against in-state rival Utah State.

The 6-3 guard made six three pointers, one shy of the BYU record, in nine attempts (11-17 overall) and went 7-8 from the line to carry the Cougars to the win. The 35-point outburst set a new career high and was the most points scored by a Cougar since Russell Larsen scored 36 against Nicholls State in 1993.

BYU improves to 11-2 on the year with the win, its fourth straight and third on the road. The Cougars, 4-2 on the road, won their third straight away game for the first time since the 1993-94 season.

After a Cougar miss on their first possession, Michael Vranes stole the ball and dunked on the other end to give BYU a 2-0 lead. The Aggies tied the game at two on a Bernard Rock layup, but BYU would never again shared the lead, shooting 57 percent in the first half to take a 40-28 halftime advantage.

The Aggies made a run in the early going of the second half, but Lyday closed the door each time the Aggies got within striking distance. After Utah State closed the gap to four points at 47-43, Lyday responded with one of his six treys. Minutes later, another Lyday three gave BYU a 10-point lead at 58-48. When the Aggies went on an 8-0 run to get within four again at 65-61 with five minutes remaining, Lyday scored four straight points and six of BYU's next eight to keep the Cougars in control. Lyday scored 24 of his 35 points in the second half.

Silester Rivers scored 15 points off the bench while Mekeli Wesley added 11and Vranes nine. Todd Christensen scored seven points, all in the early going, in his first start of the year to help the Cougars hot shooting in the first half. For the game, BYU shot 50 percent from the floor and from three-point range while the Aggies shot 39 percent, including 25 percent from behind the arc. Wesley had team highs of eight rebounds and three assists.

Tony Brown, who scored 18 points, led Utah State. The Aggies fall to 9-5 with the loss.
