Men’s basketball named No. 2 seed in NIT

PROVO, Utah – BYU men’s basketball received a No. 2 seed in the 2022 National Invitational Tournament Sunday.  

Making the 15th NIT appearance in program history, including the second consecutive postseason bid under Mark Pope, BYU earned a No. 2 seed and will face No. 7 seed Long Beach State on Wednesday, March 16, at the Marriott Center in Provo. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. MDT on ESPN+.

Wednesday will mark the 12th all-time meeting between the two programs and first since 2015 when they met in the ESPN Tip-Off Marathon. In their last meeting, Corbin Kaufusi recorded a 17-point, 10 rebound double-double in a 66-65 set back to LBSU.

BYU enters the NIT with 22 wins on the season, the third straight season with 20 or more wins under head coach Mark Pope. The Cougars hold a NET ranking of 54 with seven wins between Quadrant 1 and Quadrant 2.

Second round NIT games will take place on March 19-20 and the quarterfinals on March 22-23, both at campus sites. The semifinals on March 29 and the championship game on March 31 will played at Madison Square Garden in New York, N.Y.
