Barcello, Traore earn All-WCC honors
SAN MATEO, Calif. – BYU’s Alex Barcello and Fousseyni Traore earned All-West Coast Conference recognition Wednesday, with Barcello earning first team honors for the second straight season and Traore being named to the All-WCC freshman team.
Barcello has established himself as one of the top 3-point shooters in the nation ranking fourth in the nation in 3-point percentage. The senior guard from Chandler, Ariz. is averaging 17.0 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.1 assists while shooting 45.7 percent from the field, 44.4 percent from 3-point range and 88.6 percent from the free throw line.
The program’s all-time leader in 3-point percentage, Barcello has scored in double figures 23 times this season including a career-high 33-point performance at Pepperdine. He went 9-of-10 from 3-point range, which is the second-most by a Cougar in a single game in program history.
Traore has had one of the best freshman seasons in program history as the 6-foot-6 forward is averaging 9.0 points, 8.4 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game, shooting 57.2 percent from the field and 75.0 percent from the free throw line. Entering postseason play, he ranks third in the WCC in rebounds per game and fourth in blocks per game.
The native of Bamako, Mali has recorded seven double-doubles, tied for the second-most by a freshman in program history, including a 25-point, 19-rebound performance against Pepperdine in the regular season finale.
The Cougars will play in the second round of the 2022 University Credit Union West Coast Conference Basketball Tournament on Friday, March 4, at 7 p.m. MST. BYU – the No. 5 seed – will play the winner of Thursday’s first round matchup between Pacific and Loyola Marymount.
