Haws, Maughan and Cougar team earn NABC academic honors

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) announced that BYU men's basketball players TJ Haws and Taylor Maughan have been named to the 2019-20 NABC Honors Court. Both athletes are repeat honorees.

In addition to the individual honors for Haws and Maughan, the Cougar men's basketball team earned the NABC Team Academic Excellence Award, which recognizes outstanding academic achievement by a team with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better for the 2019-20 season.

Each spring, the National Association of Basketball Coaches recognizes men's collegiate basketball student-athletes who excelled in academics during the previous season. The NABC Honors Court celebrates the talents and gifts that these men possess off the court, and the hard work they exhibit in the classroom.

In order to be named to the Honors Court, a student-athlete must meet a high standard of academic criteria. The qualifications are as follows:

1. Academically a junior or senior and a varsity player.

2. Cumulative G.P.A. of 3.2 or higher at the conclusion of the academic year.

3. Students must have matriculated at least one year at their current institution.

4. Member of an NCAA Division I, II, III, or NAIA Division I or II institution with a full-time NABC member coach.

Haws, who recently signed to play professionally with Trefl Sopot in Poland, was named to the All-WCC First Team, the NABC All-District 9 Team and the WCC All-Academic Team while earning a spot on the CoSIDA Academic All-America Third Team. He averaged 14.0 points, 2.5 rebounds, 5.8 assists and 1.3 steals as point guard of a BYU offense that finished the season in the top five nationally in several categories, including 3-point field goal percentage (1st), assist/turnover ratio (2nd), field goal percentage (3rd), 3-point field goals per game (4th) and assists per game (5th).

Maughan appeared in 17 games for the Cougars as a senior in 2019-20, his third season with the program. A 6-foot-4 guard, Maughan also earned NABC Honors Court recognition and a spot on the WCC Commissioner's Honor Roll in 2018-19.
