Three Cougars named to the NABC Honors Court

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) announced TJ Haws, Taylor Maughan and Luke Worthington have been named to the 2018-19 NABC Honors Court. 

Each year the NABC recognizes those men’s collegiate basketball student-athletes who excelled in academics during the past season. The NABC Honors Court recognizes the talents and gifts that these student-athletes possess off the court and the hard work they exhibit in the classroom. 

In order to be named to the Honors Court, a student-athlete must meet a high standard of academic criteria. The qualifications are as follows:

  • Academically a junior or senior and a varsity player.
  • Cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.2 or higher at the conclusion of the 2018-19 academic year.
  • Students must have matriculated at least one year at their current institution.
  • Member of a NCAA Division I, II, III, or NAIA Division I or II institution with a NABC member coach.

Haws averaged 17.8 points and 3.5 rebounds while leading the team in assists (5.1) and steals (1.2) per game as a junior in 2018-19. The 6-foot-4 guard was a team captain and earned All-WCC Second Team accolades and a spot on the NABC All-District 9 Second Team. Haws was also recognized for his success in the classroom as he earned Google Cloud Academic All-District 9 First Team and WCC All-Academic Team honors.

Worthington was a four-year letterwinner for BYU and a team captain his junior and senior seasons. He appeared in 131 career games and started 63. As a senior in 2018-19, the 6-foot-10 forward averaged 2.8 points, 2.3 rebounds and shot 49.3 percent from the field. Worthington also earned a spot on the WCC All-Academic Team.

Maughan appeared in 14 games for the Cougars as a junior in 2018-19, his second season with the program. A 6-foot-4 guard, Maughan started his collegiate career at BYU-Hawaii and was a practice player at BYU as a sophomore in 2017-18.
