BYU and Boise State announce two-game series
PROVO, Utah – BYU and Boise State announced today the schools have agreed to a home-and-home men’s basketball series for 2019 and 2020.
The first meeting of the series will be at Boise State in Taco Bell Arena on Nov. 20, 2019, with the second game being played in the Marriott Center in 2020 on a date to be announced.
The Cougars and Broncos have met 13 times with the Cougars holding a 9-4 advantage. BYU is 6-1 in Provo against the Broncos, 2-3 in Boise and 1-0 on a neutral court. The Cougars earned a 94-56 win on Dec. 10, 2008, in Provo in the last game against Boise State.
BYU finished the 2018-19 season with a 19-13 overall record and tied for second in the West Coast Conference at 11-5. Coach Mark Pope enters his first season at the helm with 10 returning lettermen including All-WCC honorees Yoeli Childs (first team), TJ Haws (second team) and Gavin Baxter (freshman team).
The squad features three players who have scored 1,000-plus career points in a BYU uniform in Childs, Haws and Nick Emery. Pope also welcomes the addition of graduate transfer Jake Toolson from Utah Valley, who was the 2018-19 Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year.
Boise State finished 13-20 overall and 7-11 in the Mountain West in 2018-19. Leon Rice, who is entering his 10th season at the helm, has led the Broncos to seven 20-win seasons and five postseason appearances during his tenure.
For the 2019-20 campaign, the Broncos will return 11 student-athletes from this past season, including All-Mountain West honorees Justinian Jessup and Derrick Alston. Alston led the team in points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks in 2018-19.
