Childs earns WCC and NCAA March Madness Player of the Week honors

SAN BRUNO, Calif. – The West Coast Conference has named BYU junior forward Yoeli Childs its Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for December 10, 2018. Childs was also named NCAA March Madness' National Player of the Week.

Childs led BYU to a pair of wins against in-state foes while averaging 31.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 2.5 steals. For the week, Childs shot 70.6 percent from the field and 92.3 percent from the free-throw line.

In BYU’s 95-80 win against Utah State in Provo, Childs hit 11 of 18 from the field and 8 of 8 from the free-throw line for 31 points. He added seven rebounds, one block and a career-best five steals. In the first half, Childs totaled 14 points to help the Cougars claim a 53-34 lead at the break. In the second half, he scored 17 points and registered four steals to help BYU withstand a Utah State rally.

Childs hit 13 of 16 from the field and 4 of 5 from the line for 31 points in BYU’s 74-59 victory against Utah in Vivint Smart Home Arena in the Beehive Classic. He also had 11 rebounds and two assists for his seventh double-double of the season. Childs scored BYU’s first 12 points on 5 of 5 shooting from the field and finished the half with 15. In the second half, Childs had 16 points on 7 of 9 shooting.

With 31 points in both games this week, Childs has totaled 31 points in three-straight games. He is the first Cougar to score 30-plus points in three-straight games since Jimmer Fredette’s senior season.
