Haws' season-high not enough as BYU falls to Houston, 76-62

PROVO, Utah – TJ Haws scored a season-high 25 points as BYU fell to Houston 76-62 Saturday afternoon in the Marriott Center to close out the Men Against Breast Cancer Cougar Cup.

"We just got outplayed," BYU coach Dave Rose said. "This felt like a league game. We had a lot of young guys playing a lot of minutes out there, and I think this will be good experience for them."

Haws tied a career-high by making six 3-pointers on 12 attempts. Yoeli Childs scored 16 points and pulled down nine boards. BYU trailed for all but one minute of game time and shot 41 percent compared to Houston's 51 percent.

Haws and Childs were named to the MABCCC All-Tournament Team.

BYU called an early timeout after falling to a 9-4 deficit. Out of the timeout, Childs made a couple buckets to lead a run that put BYU up 13-12.

Six-straight Houston points put the visitors up 18-13 with 11:10 left in the first half. A pair of Haws 3-pointers kept it close, but BYU trailed 26-21 with 8:00 on the clock.

A couple minutes later, Haws hit a 3 to bring BYU within two points. After a Houston turnover, Childs threw down a transition dunk to tie the game at 28-28.

BYU went cold for the remainder of the half, knocking down just one more shot and one free throw. At the half, Houston led 37-32. Haws and Childs had 14 and 11 points, respectively.

Early in the second half, Houston went on a 15-3 run to lead by a game-high 15 points at 52-37 with just under 13 minutes left. At the 10-minute mark, BYU trailed 61-42.

A Haws 3-point play had BYU down 63-50 with seven minutes left. After a Houston field goal, McKay Cannon knocked down a 3 to cut Houston’s lead to 12 and force a timeout.

BYU got the Houston lead down to 10 points, but Houston responded with a 3-pointer and 3-point play on back-to-back possessions to go up 72-55 with 3:29 left. From there, Houston cruised to the 14-point win.

The Cougars travel to play at Illinois State on Wednesday at 7 p.m. CST. The game will be streamed live through the WatchESPN app, with radio broadcasts on KSL (1160 AM/102.7 FM) and BYU Radio (Sirius XM 143/89.1 FM HD2).
