Cannon receives NCAA waiver, eligible to play

PROVO, Utah – The BYU Athletic Department announced today that junior guard McKay Cannon has a received a waiver from the NCAA and is eligible to play immediately.

Cannon joined the Cougars during the summer as a walk-on after playing his freshman and sophomore seasons at Weber State. The 6-foot guard played in 67 games for the Wildcats and made 40 starts. As a freshman in 2015-16 he started 33 of 35 games played and averaged 5.5 points, 2.0 rebounds and 2.7 assists. Cannon helped Weber State win the Big Sky regular season and tournament titles and claim an automatic bid to the 2016 NCAA Tournament.

In 2016-17, Cannon played in 32 games and started seven. He averaged 2.6 points, 1.2 rebounds and 1.5 assists.

The all-time leading scorer in Shelley High School history, Cannon finished his prep career with 1,410 career points. As a senior, he led his team to the state championship game and was named the Idaho State Journal Boys 3A Basketball Player. As a junior, Cannon earned second-team all-state honors.
