Cougars to host Westminster in exhibition Wednesday

PROVO, Utah – BYU basketball returns to the Marriott Center for its second of three exhibition games when it hosts Westminster Wednesday at 7 p.m. MDT. The game will be televised live on BYUtv and broadcast on the BYU Sports Network on BYU Radio– Sirius XM 143, BYUcougars.com and KSL Newsradio 102.7 FM/1160 AM.

The Cougars opened exhibition play on Oct. 27 with a charity game at New Mexico. The game featured 12 ties and 12 lead changes before Jahshire Hardnett and Dalton Nixon sparked a 6-0 run to give the Cougars a 71-67 lead with 3:24 remaining. Hardnett had two steals, two points and an assist during the run while Nixon had four points and an offensive rebound.

Yoeli Childs led BYU with 17 points and game highs of 19 rebounds and four blocks against New Mexico while TJ Haws (14 points), Elijah Bryant (13) and Luke Worthington (12) also scored in double figures. Haws added a game-high six assists to go with seven rebounds while Bryant grabbed eight boards.

Hardnett finished with had nine points, three assists and two steals while Nixon totaled eight points and two rebounds off the bench in the 79-73 win against the Lobos.

Fans first saw the Cougars live in the Tipoff on Oct. 25 when Bryant, Childs and Haws led the Blue squad to an 88-68 win over the White team. Childs scored a game-high 23 points while Bryant and Haws added 20 apiece. Nixon led the White team with 19 points while Worthington and Hardnett added 16 and 14 points, respectively.

Westminster, an NCAA Division II institution, is coached by Norm Parrish. Last season, the Griffins were 16-8 overall and finished fourth in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference with a 16-6 league mark. Dayon Goodman returns for his senior season after averaging team highs of 15.8 points and 7.1 rebounds in 2016-17. Travis Devashrayee, husband of BYU women’s basketball star Cassie Devashrayee, is the Griffin’s second-leading returning scorer. He averaged 8.2 points while shooting 60.0 percent from 3 in 2016-17.

BYU’s final exhibition will be against Colorado College on Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. MST in the Marriott Center. The game will be televised live on BYUtv and broadcast on the BYU Sports Network on BYU Radio– Sirius XM 143, BYUcougars.com and KSL Newsradio 102.7 FM/1160 AM.
