BYU to play at New Mexico in charity exhibition
PROVO, Utah – BYU men’s basketball will travel to Albuquerque, New Mexico, to face the University of New Mexico in Dreamstyle Arena on Friday, Oct. 27, in an exhibition that will benefit the victims of Hurricane Harvey in Houston. The game will tip at 7:30 p.m. MT.
All proceeds from Friday’s game will benefit the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund, established by Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and County Judge Ed Emmett to provide relief for victims affected by the recent floods. The fund is housed at the Greater Houston Community Foundation, a 501(c)(3) public charity. Donations can be made to the fund at ghcf.org.
Donations from the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund are delegated to 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations that provide help throughout the community. An advisory board has been formed that is tasked with finding the best organizations to ensure the money is used wisely and benefits the people of Houston and surrounding areas.
The exhibition game has been approved by the NCAA which allows schools to compete in an additional exhibition given that the net proceeds are donated to a disaster relief charity.
Cougar coach Dave Rose attended Northbrook High School in Houston and was co-captain of the University of Houston basketball team known as Phi Slama Jama that finished as national runner-up in the 1983 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament.
BYU and New Mexico were conference rivals from 1950 to 2011 and have met 132 times in the history of the series. The Cougars hold a 77-55 record against the Lobos and won the last meeting 96-66 at the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu in 2015.
General admission tickets for the game go on-sale on Monday, Oct. 23, at 8:30 a.m. MT. Tickets can be purchased at UNMTickets.com or in person at the ticket office in Dreamstyle Arena. Additional donation opportunities for disaster relief will be available inside the arena during the game.
