Brown and Cannon added to 2017-18 roster

PROVO, Utah – BYU basketball coach Dave Rose announced today that guards Kajon Brown and McKay Cannon have been added to the roster for the 2017-18 season.

Brown, a 6-foot-5 guard and a transfer from Lee College in Baytown, Texas, fills BYU’s final open scholarship for the upcoming season. From Harvey, Louisiana, Brown will be a junior in 2017-18 and have two years of eligibility at BYU.

At Lee, Brown helped the Runnin’ Rebels to a record of 21-11 overall and 13-6 in conference play. He averaged 8.8 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.4 assists while shooting 45.8 percent from the field. Brown scored a season high of 28 points against Baton Rouge Community College. Other season highs included six rebounds, five assists and four steals.

Brown played his freshman season at Tulsa in 2015-16 and appeared in six games and made one start. He prepped at Helen Cox High School where he earned all-district honors as both a junior and senior. During his senior season in 2014-15, Brown, averaged 14.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game and led Helen Cox to the District 8-5A title and the third round of the state playoffs.

Following his senior season, Brown played for the New Orleans Elite traveling team in tournaments in Dallas and Indianapolis.

Brown’s parents are Catherine and Kenneth Wright and he has five brothers and four sisters.

Cannon joins the Cougars as a walk-on after playing his freshman and sophomore seasons at Weber State. The 6-foot guard played in 67 games for the Wildcats and made 40 starts. As a freshman in 2015-16 he started 33 of 35 games played and averaged 5.5 points, 2.0 rebounds and 2.7 assists. Cannon helped Weber State win the Big Sky regular season and tournament titles and claim an automatic bid to the 2016 NCAA Tournament.

Last season, Cannon played in 32 games and started seven. He averaged 2.6 points, 1.2 rebounds and 1.5 assists. The Shelley, Idaho, native will sit out the 2017-18 season due to NCAA transfer rules and then have two years of eligibility remaining.

The all-time leading scorer in Shelley High School history, Cannon finished his prep career with 1,410 career points. As a senior, he led his team to the state championship game and was named the Idaho State Journal Boys 3A Basketball Player. As a junior, Cannon earned second-team all-state honors.

Cannon married Weber State track athlete Maddie Ball in September 2016. He served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Chile from 2013-15. His parents are Seth and Jennifer Cannon and he has four siblings.
