BYU basketball celebrates 2016-17 season at annual banquet

PROVO, Utah – BYU men’s basketball celebrated the 2016-17 season at its annual banquet Wednesday night at the Marriott Center Annex on the campus of Brigham Young University.

The 2016-17 season was highlighted by 22 wins, an at-large bid to the National Invitational Tournament and a third-consecutive win at Gonzaga. The Zags were ranked No. 1 at the time, giving the Cougars their first win against a top ranked team in program history.

With 22 wins this season, BYU has now won 20-plus games in all 12 seasons under coach Dave Rose. The Cougars have also advanced to the postseason in all 12 seasons with Rose at the helm.

Individual highlights during 2016-17 included sophomore Eric Mika earning All-West Coast Conference First Team honors while being named a second-team CoSIDA Academic All-American and the NABC District VIII Player of the Year. Mika also earned WCC All-Academic and NABC All-District 9 First Team honors.

Freshman T.J. Haws was also named to the All-WCC First Team while he and Yoeli Childs were named to the All-WCC Freshman Team.

Voice of the Cougars Greg Wrubell served as master of ceremonies and listed the highlights, awards and milestones achieved by the team in 2016-17. Associate head coach Tim LaComb and Debbie Lewis – wife of assistant coach Quincy Lewis – paid tribute to the players and their willingness to serve the community and players Davin Guinn and Payton Dastrup entertained the crowd with piano selections.
