ST. LOUIS – The U.S. Basketball Writers Association announced today that BYU sophomore Eric Mika has been named to the USBWA All-District VIII Team and is the District Player of the Year. District VIII includes all NCAA Division I institutions from Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming.
Mika, an All-West Coast Conference First Team honoree and a second-team CoSIDA Academic All-American, has led BYU to a 22-11 record that included a win against the No. 1 team in the nation and a trip to the semifinals of the WCC Championships.
The Alpine, Utah, native has posted averages of 20.1 points, 9.2 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game. A finalist for the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award, Mika is among the top 20 in the nation in free-throw attempts, free throws made and double-doubles.
Mika is BYU’s first District VIII Player of the Year since Jimmer Fredette in 2010-11.
