QUOTES

BYU coach Dave Rose

"Pretty exciting game. Our guys battled really hard. There's so much emotion from Thursday that you wonder where they're going to get what they need to win the game. Now that it's over and the game's won, it's a good way to win a game for a young team. Tonight we just had a lot of opportunities where we let go—missed rebounds or execution on assignments—and we were still able to find a way to win the game."

On Davin Guinn's contributions:

"I thought Davin game us tremendous minutes and brought a lot of energy. Portland's athleticism has always caused us issues. That caused us to get in foul trouble toinight. He came in and his length and consistency in challenging on passes and energy lets us put him on top, which is a really important position for us. He also had a huge 3-pointer that got the crowd back involved and gave us an emotional lift when times were tough."

Thoughts on 300 wins at BYU:

"It means we can move on to the next thing. It seems like for two or three weeks fans and media talked about it and that's not very comfortable for me. Now we can look for what's next. That said, I am very grateful. I'm just grateful for all the people who have helped along the way."

Davin Guinn

On taking the role of aggressive perimeter defender:

"A while back coaches put on our lockers a quote from Andre Iguodola of the Golden State Warriors that talked about how defense is all heart. When we get stops, it's all about heart and effort."

On Dave Rose's 300th win:

"We're super excited for him. Coach Rose is a humble guy and doesn't say much about that kind of thing. He didn't tell us; we found out from other people. It's great and we're happy for him."

Yoeli Childs

How BYU secured the win:

"Davin Guinn. Effort on defense. Guys locking down on defense and making plays. We were super active tonight and I think that was the key."

The key to a strong second half:

"Be active. We were on our heels a little bit in the first half and we came out in the second half and attacked. We got our adrenaline going and were able to shake off the effects of Thursday's game."

Portland coach Terry Porter

“It’s about our spirit and going out there and competing. I think when we do that we're fine and we're going to give ourselves more chances to win those games. We did a lot of good things tonight—the guys really battled. I thought we shared the ball really well, we did good things offensively and even defensively. We have lot of things we can take from this game and carry onto the next game.” â€‹

On the environment at the Marriott Center:

“You have to embrace these moments. This is what college basketball is all about. What an unbelievable environment. As we go on this journey to rebuild this program, we want to be tested in these type of environments and see what we do collectively, and that’s all you ask for. We love coming to these type of environments because it tells us what we have to work on, and it’s a process.”
