PLAYER NOTES

Yoeli Childs had a career-high 19 points and 12 rebounds to give him his second-straight double-double and third in four games.

Childs also blocked a career-high four shots for his third-straight game with at least three blocks. He is now ninth all-time at BYU for blocks by a freshman with 22.

With 23 points, Nick Emery reached the 20-point mark for the third time this season. Emery hit five 3-pointers to tie his season high.

TJ Haws scored 14 points for his sixth-straight game in double figures.

With 13 points, Eric Mika continued his streak of scoring 10-plus points in each game this season. Mika also grabbed 10 rebounds to give him his sixth double-double.

Steven Beo scored a career-high seven points, one game after his previous best of six points against Idaho State.

TEAM NOTES

The first half was one of shooting extremes. BYU shot 58.6 percent, its best first-half mark of the season. The Cougars allowed the Roadrunners to shoot just 27 percent, the second-worst for a BYU opponent in the first half.

After Mika opened up the scoring with a layup, the Cougars led the entire game.

BYU shot 53 percent from the field (26-of-49) for its best mark of the season.

QUOTES

BYU head coach Dave Rose

"I thought our first half might have been as good as we've played all year. Defensively, we were really dialed in. We rebounded well off of misses. Offensively, without Eric for most of the first half, we found a good rhythm. Yoeli (Childs) was great.

"With a young group, the confidence got taken out of us a little bit in the second half. They made it a close game again. We hung on though to win the game.

"I'm excited about our shooting percentage tonight. I think we can be there overall. The concerning numbers are the 18 offensive rebounds for them and our 21 turnovers. It was one of the first teams that really came after us on the offensive boards. They exposed us a little there.

"That's the kind of team that could really cause you problems. Lots of athletic guys that are always coming in and out of the game. Their coach is a master at defensive pressure and taking the ball away from you. I'm happy with how we dealt with it and that we won."

Yoeli Childs

On holding CSUB to 27 first-half points:

"It was just us getting in that defensive mentality. That's what's most important for us. When we're locked down on defense, the offense just happens. We just have to focus on who's in front of us."

On gaining confidence in the offense:

"Getting more experience and minutes on the court helps. Practice is great, but on-court minutes help you more and the game slows down. I also have great teammates who are showing me what to do."

On whether his mindset changes when Mika is in foul trouble:

"I just want to keep playing hard, keep defending and rebounding. I want to just keep playing my game and playing consistent.".

Nick Emery

On TJ Haws' second-half 3 that put BYU back up by more than 10:

"I think the game is all about momentum. They had momentum in the seocnd half and they were hitting tough shots. TJ's shot was big in helping us get that momentum back."

On preparing for conference play:

"It's going to be a battle. Conference is tough. Teams can scout you more. Santa Clara beat Valporaiso tonight, and that's a big win. We just need to not take any games lightly and play BYU basketball."
