QUOTES

BYU head coach Dave Rose

"It was a really hard fought game and competitive on both ends. Defensively it was pretty physical. Both teams had each other scouted pretty well so it was hard to run stuff. They came and tied it in the second half. Our guys had to dig in. We didn’t have a good flow us offensively but defensively we did a good job of contesting possession by possession.

"Our guards weren’t as active as we needed to be at that time. Sometimes those big guys are locked up with physical contact on that shot. It’s hard to separate and go get the ball with defensive rebounds but we’ll watch and learn from that. I’m really happy for the win and I’m looking forward to the game on Saturday."

Players that stood out

"Eric worked hard all game long to help his team and I’m proud of him. He did a good job of hanging in there. Yoeli, KD, and Jamal gave us a few good minutes in the first half. It was a really slow paced game. Randy did a really good job of controlling the tempo of the game so it allowed our guys to not get tired. We played few guys a lot of minutes. It was good for us to competitive and get a win."

Improving the offensive pace

"I hope we can find a way to bring it together. We’ve had really fast-paced teams, but right now it’s a team that needs more confidence. We need more confidence in our ability to race the ball up and get it in, get it out and bring it back in again. It seems like our guards are really tense right now. Hopefully we can find a way to break through it. Practice, that’s what I think. We’ve got two games in the next 12 days. We can practice and work on it. We’ve got some real data points of what the strengths of our team are. We can all dial in and play to the strengths of our team and then improve some of the other things."

Eric Mika

On his second-half scoring outburst

"I think we did a good job of getting me the ball in the first half as well. I had a hard time playing aggressively because they were sending two guys. I think we were converting on my kick-outs and we were playing well. I just needed to step it up aggressively. My guys had faith in me and kept giving me the ball. I was able to play a lot more aggressively in the second half."

On whether he likes physical play

"When I make my free throws, yes. Tonight, I think I was a little bit tired. I was in there for a long stretch. I wasn’t knocking them all down, but I would say yes, absolutely yes, that’s my favorite way to play. And I think that’s how our team likes to play. Like Kyle was saying, we want to get in the middle, we want to play inside out, we want to draw fouls or get easy buckets."

Kyle Davis

On tonight’s game plan after USC

"We would never try to slow it down, but it’s trying to be more efficient and get the ball where want to. We really want to go inside out—that’s something Coach has been trying to do. In the first half, like I was saying, they were double-teaming. The first couple plays of the game, TJ hit a 3, Nick hit a 3 off of Eric’s kick-out. If we can play that way and continue to do that, it should be really good for us.

"No, the game plan didn’t change, but we tried to be a little bit more focused and efficient."

On limited playing time due to injury

"I’m trying to take advantage of the time I have out there and contribute to this team. If that’s a lot of minutes or a few minutes, I want to be able to help the team out."

Weber State head coach Randy Rahe

On what made the difference in the outcome of the game

"Free throws. All you have to do is look at free throws. We missed like what, 15? It’s a 10-point ball game and we hit those like we normally do and it’s anyone’s game coming down the stretch.

"I think sometimes when someone misses early it become contagious. I think that’s what happened with our team—we saw a couple of our guys step up and miss and they got a little bit tight and it’s too bad because we played the way we wanted to play tonight. We took them out of transition, we challenged our guys to rebound with them and I think they’re one of the better rebounding teams in the country and we did both of those things. We gave ourselves a chance to be in the right position. I didn’t see the hole in the dike of missing free throws."
