Quotes

BYU head coach Dave Rose

On tonight’s game:

“It was quite an emotional night in there. The energy was good, great crowd and I think they saw a really good college basketball game. Both teams were really prepared and both battling each other. It was good to see Anson back in the lineup. I thought he played really well for us. He gave us a huge spark off the bench in the first half then we started him in the second half and he really gave us a lift.”

On the slow start:

“I remember some tough starts on senior night. They had a good plan and they were consistent with it. We didn’t score any in that period but we had quite a few fouls called and that really helped us later in the half when we got in the bonus. We got 13 points from the free throw line in the first half and a lot of that had to do with how the game was being played the first six or seven minutes.”

On where the team is at:

“These guys are really focused on our game plan and are really focused for these four-minute segments [during games]. I think we are in pretty good shape. We will find out. We have a pretty tough road trip this week. We got swept on this thing last year so we will see how it goes.”

Tyler Haws

On senior night:

“I’m proud of our guys and proud of our effort. We got off to a slow start but we got it going. There are so many fun memories in this building and you put in so much hard work with all these guys, winning and finishing on a good note felt really good.”

On the slow start:

“I don’t know if we were still thinking about senior night, but we eventually got it going. We talked about being aggressive and attacking them. Anson actually got us going. He got a few buckets early and we fed off his energy.”

On state of the team:

“We are feeling good and have won four in a row but we are still hungry. We feel like we have a lot to prove and in a lot of ways we feel like our tournament has already started. We have to bring it every time we step on the floor. I feel like we are in a good spot but we are still hungry to keep going.”

Anson Winder

On senior night:

“It is hard to take it all in. This is the last time you will prepare for a home game, the last time you come here and go through the warmup and anticipation for a game. It was a weird feeling but after all the emotions of going through senior night it felt good to get out and play and run around with the guys again and get a win on your last home game.”

On out rebounding San Diego:

“It was mentality and toughness. Down at their place they beat us pretty good on the boards, so we made a conscious effort tonight to make sure that didn’t happen and I think we did a great job. Our bigs did a great job getting bodies and rebounding.”

San Diego head coach Bill Grier

On what happened in the second half:

“They turned up the heat defensively. We didn’t respond and we turned it over. The first half we did a good job taking away threes from them. In the second half in that first four minutes they made three threes before the media timeout. I just thought the first few minutes was the difference in the whole game.”

On BYU:

“Against them, if you take a bad shot or turn it over, they are going to score at the other end within about seven seconds. That’s what they did every time we made a mistake.”

On San Diego:

“We just couldn’t get stops down the stretch. We kept putting them at the free throw line. We had it to 10 a couple times, but we couldn’t get a score and couldn’t get a stop. That’s the way it is.”

On officiating:

“It did seem like it was tighter than it has been. As players you have to adjust to that. That’s just the way it was called.”
