Quotes

BYU head coach Dave Rose

"That was a good team win for our guys. I think we had quite a few players that really stepped up and really played well. We shared the ball well. In the last 15 minutes of the second half we just played really inspired. We got a great lift from Skyler off the bench. I thought that Josh and the minutes that he played, he gave us some great minutes.”

Last 15 minutes of the second half:

“I think that our team is kind of at a crossroads where consistency has kind of been an issue for us. The size of this team and the physical nature of this team has been something we have kind of struggled with. I think our guys are kind of determined to get over the hump. Our guys responded well to Pacific's physicality. I think earlier in the game we rushed into the first open space. We kind of let them determine where we would shoot.”

On Josh Sharp:

“These rebounds that he's getting for us are really timely, key offensive rebounds. Defensively, he is just giving us a big lift. I think that his legs are pretty fresh and there are times where he just rises up through them all. Those were some really key plays he made.”

Quick timeout in the 2nd half:

“They made three baskets within six inches of the basket. That's what they do. If you kind of are there and don't really work hard, they score. We were just kind of lethargic. I give credit to Tyler, Chase and Kyle, those three captains. They had a nice look in their eye that inspired the rest of them.”

Defense:

“We were in the zone for quite a while, trying to deal with their size. Then when we went man-to-man, we had good rotations. I think Corbin did a good job of rotating and protecting the rim.”

Taking Kyle out:

“That should prove to you that when I tell you I don't know what's going on, I don't know. I am dialed into one thing, trying to win a game. That made me really nervous at the end when we were really chippy. Something that happens in the last couple seconds of the game can affect the next one. I knew something was going on because everyone booed. My assistants told me when he got in that he had a pass to Chase and a pass to Skyler, so it's probably on them more than it's on me.”

Seniors that can't play because of injuries:

“I think that their energy is good, but what is really good is the fact that they are experienced and they are vocal. They can help guys in certain situations that are difficult. When they come off, I think the interaction that they have is good, especially when the young guys know that they have these older guys pulling for them.”

Seniors:

“I think this group is really committed. They are committed guys to their individual games, to their academics and to our team and our program. I think it's great when you have a group of guys that come through here and are able to experience this and leave with some really great experiences and can really help the next group that comes through. Last year there were no seniors. Next week, it will be a little different.”

Kyle Collinsworth

Overall thoughts on game:

“We won. We finally got that feeling that we had on Thursday. It was good to end the game like that. “

On Sharp:

“He can rebound. He can jump extremely high. He gives us that. He goes in there and makes the offensive rebound, gets us an extra shot. He makes the big blocks down the stretch - he just fights for us with his athletic ability.”

After an emotional game Thursday:

“It's a little hard physically and also mentally. Obviously, Saint Mary's is a better team than Pacific. It's hard in this conference to get your mind going and your body going into the second game of the week. Yeah, it's a little tough, but we responded and ended the game on a good note. We hope to carry that on to next week.”

Skyler Halford

Off bench:

“I’m just trying to be positive with myself, confident with my shooting. Just trying to get myself open for my teammates when they're driving in there and kicking it. Just trying to knock it down when the opportunity presents itself. That's just the name of the game for all of our guys. When your number's called, you just have to get in there and make a difference. I was trying to do the best that I can.”

Finally getting a big lead:

“We kept getting five point leads, I noticed that. I think it's just a mental thing. In that stretch there we had a technical and a few extra possessions and we got up by six, eight and 10. It was just kind of a mental thing where we had to break through. We did and that was big for us. We started rebounding the ball well and guys were playing really well.”

On Frank:

“He's an amazing athlete. He can jump so high. He's a great slasher. He's starting to hit outside shots too. I think he's playing confidently. He gives us that much more of a boost from the bench. That's what we need. Guys stepping up from the bench. That's what Frank's doing. He's doing a great job."

Pacific head coach Ron Verlin

“I thought they had a great stretch in the second half, where they beat us in conversions. They got rebounds, they got stick-backs and free throws. We got a technical foul and it changes the game.”

“They had a huge second half and coach Rose does a great job playing four guards. Those guys can really shoot and they played really hard.”

Defending four guards:

“Pray. No, I mean when you do that we love to go small a little bit. We went small a little bit, but we knew when you play four guards we’ve got to do a great job of pounding that ball inside, and I thought at times we did a good job of getting in. So, make them defend us and put a lot of pressure on. We played a lot of zone tonight, but then we have to defend on that end, and we didn’t play four guards that much tonight.”
