Quotes

BYU head coach Dave Rose

“I’m pleased with the response of our guys. I thought we played with a lot of urgency tonight and a lot of emotion in a game that was really tough because we didn’t have a lot of things going right for us. We were good defensively and turned them over, but we were having a hard time getting shots, especially 3-pointers. I told the guys that we found another way to win it, and we’ll take it and move on.”

On tonight’s rotation:

“I think they all committed pretty well in practice to all help where we’re all trying to play a little different than we’ve played in the past, and trying to give other guys some minutes to limit the minutes of the starters. We’re in the end of January and we’re still a work in progress trying to find ourselves.”

On being in the front in a close game:

“I think it was all pretty precarious in the second half. You never get over that seven-point lead and had good looks three or four times and missed them all. We found other ways to do it and that’s a good thing.”

Tyler Haws

On grinding it out:

“Seems like we had a few of those games going the other way. It’s nice when we’re not shooting the ball well and we get a grind-it-out win like that. I’m proud of all our guys for fighting to the end and Anson had some huge shots at the end to help us.”

On the chance to pass Danny Ainge:

“It’ll be fun. Danny was a great player and it’s just an honor to have my name up there with those guys, but I have to give all the credit to my teammates. I just want to get a win.”

On four-guard offense:

“I definitely think they change up their lineup and they’re adjusting to what we’re doing. That’s what we want. We want them to adjust to our style. I thought we played on attack for the most part, but when we can play at our style and pace, we can be pretty good.”

Anson Winder

On free throws at the end:

“Relax and focus on making the first shot and hopefully making the second. We’ve been in these situations before, and to be on top of it is a good feeling.”

On forcing turnovers:

“We wanted to be more aggressive, and we wanted to get up the line to pressure a little bit. It worked out well for us, because we don’t usually cause this many turnovers."

San Francisco head coach Rex Walters

"We just came up short. We need to make a few plays here and there. I thought BYU played hard. They’re a good team. We just didn’t do enough to get it done."

"Our job was to try as much as we could to stay in our rotations, that was the biggest thing. I thought the first game they had us on skates. They played really fast, but I think we did a much better job of obviously getting matched up. We did some things defensively to try to keep them off balance. I thought we did a good job of that. I thought they hurt us on the glass. I thought they got to the free-throw line an awful lot. Honestly, that hurt us. Some might think there might be some discrepancies in how the game was called. I haven’t watched the tape. I’ll have to watch the tape to see."
