Quotes

BYU head coach Dave Rose

"They got the lead and I thought our guys competed hard, but we were kind of erratic and we weren't in the flow or pace of how we play, but we fought. We battled and we got it to a point where I thought we could maybe sneak one out in the end, but they made the plays down the stretch."

"We were pretty adamant with our guys that we needed to drive that thing in there and see if we could get a foul called and get to the free throw line. Finally, late in the game we shot our first free throw. Usually on drives, teams suck in and leave shooters open and they didn't do that so we had lanes to the basket, but tonight they didn't fall."

"We got enough initial defensive stops, but they had quite a few second and third chances and ended up scoring and that's probably the difference in the game."

"The history with this group so far is that they bounce back pretty well, but we'll see. This will be tough. We had a nice roll going and this is a setback that we need to overcome. We still have a lot of games to play."

"They did a good job of getting us out of rhythm and they got us to take tougher shots out of our sets and they scored on the other end. It's tough to beat a team when you can't stop them from scoring and they did that a lot tonight and it cost us."

"We weren't as aggressive as we should have been and we didn't make the plays that we needed to make to get to the free throw line like we usually do. We need to get better for the next game."

Chase Fischer

"They're a really good defensive team, especially around the perimeter and we knew that coming in. We had looks and chances and we didn't make enough plays. It all needs to start with a stop and we didn't get enough of those in crucial moments."

"We didn't drive hard enough and get enough contact to get fouls. Even with that, we had our chances and I still think it comes down to the defensive end and they hit a lot of tough shots, but we gave them some too."

"We have a lot of smart players and unselfish guys and we trust each other to make shots. We just take what the defense gives us and attack and shoot when we're open and in rhythm. We made the right plays, but we just didn't finish them"

Pepperdine head coach Marty Wilson

On winning in Provo:

“This was big for our team and our program to come in and get a win. I thought our guys stuck to the game plan trying to prevent them fast break points, trying to prevent them from easy threes. We had a goal to hold them to six 3-pointers made and we did that. And not allowing them free throws and they only got eight free throws.”

On Stacy Davis:

“He’s our go-to guy. He’s been our go-to guy for the last couple of years. He is an all-conference player for us. He has the ability to go inside and out. If you are not doubling him, he’s going to go inside. If you’re doubling him, we are going to take him outside and he has the advantage over bigger guys.”

On rebounding tonight:

“That is a big part of it. We talk about us finishing plays. It does us no good to defend for 15, 20, 30 seconds then allow them to get offensive rebounds because that’s when they flow. They get offensive rebounds, they kick it out and hit threes and those are back-breakers. That was a big part, trying to limit them to one shot per possession.”
