Quotes

BYU head coach Dave Rose

"I've said this before after really hard-fought wins – this is really special. This is a real team victory for us. Our guys, from top to bottom, battled through a game that was really difficult for us to get into any kind of rhythm. They did a really good job of taking us out of rhythm and guarding our shooters. We had some open shots that we missed. We just never really got that flow in here that we seem to get at times. We were able to make a few plays late and win the game. We got really fortunate with the missed free throw to get it to overtime. It's one of those games where both teams played hard and well enough where it's sad to see anybody get beat, but I'm happy for our guys. I think we can build on our last nonconference game as a team going into what's going to be quite an interesting and competitive conference season. I look forward to that on Saturday."

"We talked a lot during the last couple of days in preparation and then a lot on the bench tonight to try and find that guy (who would take over the scoring role for Haws). Kyle was playing so aggressively. We had to play him so many minutes and had to rely on so many things with him as far as guarding the ball up top and rebounding in the lane. We felt it needed to be someone else. We called two or three sets for him. He's been the guy that's practiced in Ty's spot. He kind of yields to Ty. I had a talk with him yesterday and told him how important he is to our team. I said, 'We'll just see how long it takes for Ty to get back.' Anson's a guy that kind of filled that role tonight. He's been good all year long. He's been so consistent. He's a guy that's got his bachelor's degree and now he's working on a master's degree. He's been here for five years. It's just great to see him rewarded with really consistent play."

"They hit that first three (in overtime) that kind of took the wind out of our sails. We battled through those first couple of minutes. Obviously, the big play was the ball screen with Corbin and Frank. They both jumped out on Frank and he made a great play – handed it off to Corb and Corb finished it. That gave us a three-point lead. Then we made some free throws down the stretch. It was just a group of guys battling, trying to find a way to win a game. It's a little nerve-wracking as a coach, but obviously it's fun to watch guys come together and find ways to make plays."

"We all knew we needed to step up. Tyler was a little banged up. We needed to step up our game and the guys off the bench did a great job. Skyler (Halford), Frank (Bartley) did great. They brought energy when they came in to the game."

Strategy in overtime:

"The strategy was to keep them out of the paint. We knew they do so well scoring in the paint, getting offensive rebounds. Our job was to rebound and make them shoot contested jump shots."

On his clutch free throws down the stretch:

"It felt good. I missed a few against Stanford and I was upset with myself. I made it a conscious effort to come in and make as many as I could today. I was able to step up to the line and knock them down."

His mindset during final seconds with UMass at the line:

"You're just hoping and praying that he misses both. We were able to get one, so we'll take that one. It's a nervous feeling but we were able to claw it out."

Frank Bartley IV

On his assisted dunk to Kaufusi:

"The shot clock was at eight, and coach was about to call a timeout. His man came off me and I saw Corbin open up for the pass."

Coach's instruction to him during crucial moments:

"Just play defense, that's what I do best. Go in, get stops, rebound, and help any way I can."

On team defense in final minutes of overtime:

"The goal for the whole game was to make them shoot outside of the paint. In overtime, we were even more focused on those keys. We made them shoot contested jump shots and we got the rebounds."

UMass head coach Derek Kellogg

On defending Haws:

"We made sure he had 'high alert' as we call it. So whenever he was on the floor, we put our best defender on him and the big guys were told to go with him, make sure we double team him. I think he’s still laboring a tad, so he’s a very good player. I love watching him on tape and I thought it was good that our guys paid attention to detail on the scout report today."

On Esho fouling out:

"I mean that was a big play, obviously. Your senior, kind of one of your senior leaders, a guy who was playing very well and got us a couple of extra possessions on the offensive end. He was scoring on the other end of the floor. When that happened, it took a little wind out of our sails and the group that was in had a good flow, so I had to go face them with four guards. Jabarie Hinds hadn’t played much and then he’s thrust into a situation where a lot’s on the line at that point."
